Growing up as the only child of a single mother, the strength and independence my mother showed me through her actions motivate me to continually challenge myself academically and socially; hence, my application to Barnard. As a young woman interested in engineering and physics, I believe in the importance of a supportive network and seeing females in leadership positions in male-dominated fields. I believe Barnard offers this type of support and excellence in education that I seek in a college. In tandem with engineering, Barnard’s excellent liberal arts tradition will equip me with the necessary knowledge to understand and apply engineering skills in solving real-life problems.
I am keenly interested in Barnard’s unique 4+1 Pathways in engineering and applied sciences. The partnership between Barnard and Columbia Engineering will accelerate my career by allowing me to obtain a BA and an MS. This extraordinary program is a significant factor that influences my decision to apply to Barnard.
Having visited Barnard, I believe its size and location make a good match for me. As I entered the hallowed gates of Barnard, I couldn’t help but notice the academic environment that contrasted with the bustling Manhattan. While benefiting from professional resources, entertainment, and other exciting opportunities of NYC, Barnard’s size allows it to maintain a tight-knit community. Programs like Beyond Barnard would help me find internships and better segue into the professional world. Traditions like the Big Sub and Midnight Breakfast will help me create special bonds with other students and faculties.
